Extended family Values
My current research project, "Extended Family Values," examines the relationships between LGBT same-sex parents (and their children) and their extended family members (e.g., parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.).
From the perspective of same-sex parents and their children, I'm interested in how extended family members support (or not) their families, and how they negotiate our family identities in the context of extended family. From the perspective of the extended family members, I'm interested in how they "come out" about being related to a person in a same-sex relationship, how they negotiate their relationships to the same-sex family in their lives, and so on. I'm also interested in organizers/activists who work with extended family members and their experiences facilitating groups (like PLFAG) and organizations for family members of same-sex parents. I am interested in conducting interviews with the following groups:
1) same-sex parents, aged 18 or older, who have had a child (through birth or adoption) with a same-sex partner(s) within the last 20 years. Non-gestational/non-biological parents are strongly encouraged to participate! The confidential interview will last approximately 1.5 hours (interviews can be in-person, on the phone, or via skype). Participants will be given a $15 gift card for their time.
2) extended family members of same-sex parents, aged 18 or older, who are related to a person who has had a child (through birth or adoption) with a same-sex partner(s) within the last 20 years. Extended family members may be parents, grandparents, cousins, siblings, aunts/uncles of the same-sex parent. Relatives of non-gestational/non-biological parents are strongly encouraged to participate! Extended family members of same-sex parents can participate in either 1) a confidential interview that will last approximately 1.5 hours (interviews can be in-person, on the phone, or via skype), or a focus group (group interview with other family members of same-sex parents) that will last approximately 1 hour. Interview participants will be given a $15 gift card for their time, and focus group participants will be given a $10 gift card for their time.
3) children (aged 13 to 20) of same-sex parents. The confidential interview will last approximately 1 hour (interviews can be in-person, on the phone, or via skype). Participants will be given a $15 gift card for their time. Participants under 18 must have the consent of one of his/her parents to participate.
4) activists/organizers of groups for parents and family members of LGBT people, aged 18 or older, who have worked with parents and family members of LGBT people for at least 6 months in the last 5 years. The confidential interview will last approximately 1 hour (interviews can be in-person, on the phone, or via skype). Participants will be given a $15 gift card for their time.
